A Winter Solstice Butterfly

Red Admiral Butterfly

Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and here is a surprise, a winter butterfly! A Red Admiral (Vanessa Atalanta)

A number of British butterflies hibernate and this one had chosen a cool place indoors to settle down for the winter. The Christmas log fire awoke this sleeping beauty too soon.

The Butterfly is now in a cardboard box in the garden shed, where hopefully it will return to hibernation and survive until the Spring.
